What’s it all about?

Is it Art?

Sometimes referred to as naïve art or primitivism, folk art is a manifestation of raw creativity characterized by a seemingly simplistic approach that is uninhibited yet intuitive to composition and ideas. This art form often ignores customary rules of proportion or perspective. It may lack formal or traditional schooling in its concept.

Folk Art?

I think much depends on one’s perspective. If a piece evokes some kind of special meaning or emotion, if the colors, textures or shapes are pleasing, or if you just like it… then it may be called “Art”.

Some art occurs due to forces of nature, such as in leaf patterns or sea shells. Some pieces are created by accident and only discovered and considered after the fact, like paint splotches or cast shadows in a photograph.

Fine art is the result of many years in training, studying and perhaps even mimicking the style of Michelangelo, Rembrandt or Van Gogh. This deserving artform is to be respected and appreciated in its own right.

Modern art is in a class by itself and may also be the result of concentrated study with respect to all the conventions that go into art (composition, shape, color, tonal value, contrast, sharpness, gradations and so on).

My Art?

I have little formal training in fine art as such. However I spent more than four decades in the printing industry reproducing other people’s work. I like to think the experience sharpened my awareness and sensitivity to art.

Now retired for a dozen years or so, I have had the time to experiment with my own style of creativity. I enjoy crafting unique things with my hands. I have made everything from towel racks to blanket chests including boxes, crates, serving trays, candlestick holders, wooden puppets, beehives and various toys of all descriptions. But mostly I paint.

My subjects are imaginary ideas coming from somewhere deep within me. My style is ever changing as I enjoy exploring different methods of applying paint to the canvas. I don't have any specific goals in mind other than letting the creative juices flow as they may.

Kitsch Art?

Kitsch is a term loosely applied to art and design that might be perceived as naïve imitation, overly eccentric, gratuitous or even of banal taste. But art deemed kitsch may be enjoyed in an entirely positive and sincere manner.

Kitsch art carries the ability to be quaint or "quirky" without being offensive on the surface, as in the Dogs Playing Poker paintings by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge.
